Powering Miami’s Boating Life; Reliable Marine’s Rise

Miami’s waterfront glows with more than just neon nights and postcard-perfect water. Its real radiance comes from the people who build, service, and power the boats carrying families, fishers, and pros through the city’s blue lanes. On this episode of the Wards Way Podcast, host Kristina Hebert sits down at the Miami Boat Show with Reuben Rhodes, owner of Reliable Marine, to reveal the stories, challenges, and expertise that fuel Miami’s marine industry. Reuben’s journey started with a family freight business and a boat shop across the street, where childhood curiosity evolved into hands-on work and, eventually, a career. Years later, he launched Reliable Marine, grew the business from Honda to Suzuki, and built a reputation anchored in repower expertise, quick turnarounds, and a simple promise: treat customers and staff like family, and let the work speak for itself.

That pivot to Suzuki was no accident. Reuben watched Miami owners drive north for repowers because there wasn’t a major local dealer that could serve them quickly. He bet on demand, wrestled for a chance with Suzuki, and then delivered. The first year, Reliable ranked number one in its district and never looked back, later topping the nation in 2024 and 2025. COVID brought a paradox of high demand and low supply. Engines sold as fast as shipments arrived, waitlists stretched to six months, and output was capped by inventory. Once supply loosened, Reliable scaled to hundreds more motors a year while guarding a core value: never let the schedule slip beyond three weeks, even if it means nights and weekends.

Engines themselves have transformed the boating experience. Four-stroke outboards now start like cars and rarely fail without a culprit: bad fuel. Reuben frames modern reliability in practical steps—buy ethanol-free Rec 90, monitor the Racor water-separating filter with a clear bowl, and drain at the first sign of water. Education matters as much as installation. Customers often believe dealer service is required for warranty coverage, but he clarifies that while certified service is wise for records and support, basic maintenance is owner-friendly when done right. With standard five-year coverage and a current seven-year factory warranty promotion on 150 horsepower and up, protection now travels with the boat and sustains resale value.

Technology invites debate. Remote starts, joysticks, and bow thrusters promise effortless docking, yet Reuben favors fewer failure points when you’re far from help. It’s not anti-tech; it’s pro-reliability. Simpler systems mean fewer surprises in the Bahamas or beyond. That same mindset shapes Reliable’s sales model: no boxed engines, no exports, every unit installed, commissioned, and supported locally. It keeps quality consistent, relationships strong, and accountability clear. It also echoes how Miami boating really works—trust is forged at the rigging bench and proven on the water.

Then there’s access, the invisible throttle on Miami’s boating economy. Boat ramps choke on weekends, lines form before dawn, and lots close by mid-morning. For weekday riders, it’s fine; for nine-to-fivers, it’s a wall. Reuben argues more ramps would lift the entire ecosystem: more use, more repowers, more service, more parts, and more spending in marinas and neighborhoods. The Keys offer relief and rhythm, which is why his family time and sea trials orbit Black Point, Matheson, and all points south. That’s where the city’s boating heart still beats: simple, clean water, a reliable start, and a quick run to the open sea.

Beneath the stats and show lights, Miami boating is still personal. It’s a kid’s first fish on a Spanish mackerel run, a new boat finally seen on the show floor after a long day, and a small shop that became a national leader by solving one local problem at a time. If you want a formula, it’s this: build capacity that honors time, teach fuel discipline, simplify where it counts, and fight for access so more people can reach the water. The rest—growth, rankings, recognition—tends to follow the wake. In a city powered by industry and defined by lifestyle, reliable engines and reliable people make the magic feel effortless.
